Chennai Super Kings (CSK), already struggling in IPL 2025 with back-to-back defeats, have been dealt a major blow. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the remainder of the 18th season due to an elbow injury. In his absence, MS Dhoni will once again take over the captaincy.
Veteran skipper "Mahi Bhai" will lead the team in their upcoming matches. Head Coach Stephen Fleming confirmed during a press meet on Thursday that Ruturaj will miss the rest of the season. CSK management also confirmed the news through an official statement.
Ruturaj, who took over CSK's captaincy from Dhoni in the 17th season, impressed with both the bat and his leadership. He guided the team with composure and relied on Dhoni’s valuable advice. However, during a match against Rajasthan Royals, Ruturaj sustained a serious blow to his left elbow while batting. This raised doubts about his participation in the following match against Delhi Capitals.
Though he did take the field against Delhi, he struggled and scored only a few runs. Medical tests later revealed a minor fracture in his elbow bone. Doctors have advised rest, ruling him out for the rest of the tournament.
In the current season, CSK's overall performance has dipped. While both the top and middle order have failed to deliver consistently, Ruturaj stood out, scoring 122 runs in 5 matches, including two half-centuries. His absence is a big setback for the team.
Despite being five-time champions, CSK has only managed to secure a win against Mumbai Indians this season. Their inability to chase targets over 180 has cost them matches. With a poor show so far, CSK is currently placed 9th on the points table. They are set to face defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Friday.
