BCCI’s Key Decision on Captaincy For Test Matchs

The Indian cricket team is set to tour England soon for a five-match Test series. According to reports, Rohit Sharma will continue as India's Test captain for the series.

India recently faced a whitewash in the Test series against New Zealand at home and suffered a crushing defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Test series against Australia. Rohit was unavailable for the five-Test series in Australia. However, the BCCI has reportedly decided to entrust him with the captaincy for the England series, scheduled from June 20 to August 4, 2025.

Rohit Sharma’s Form and Leadership

During the New Zealand and Australia tours, Rohit struggled with form, leading to widespread criticism from former players and fans, with some calling for his removal from Test captaincy. Despite this, under his leadership, India recently won the ICC Champions Trophy, restoring faith in his captaincy.

The BCCI has decided to announce the squad only after the conclusion of the IPL 2025, considering the form and availability of players. The lengthy IPL season will help assess players’ fitness and performance before finalizing the Test squad.

Tour Schedule and Warm-up Matches

Before the five-match Test series, India will play two four-day warm-up matches:

  • May 30 – First match at Canterbury, St. Lawrence Ground

  • June 6 – Second match at Northampton

The Test series will commence on June 20 at Headingley, with the final Test scheduled from July 31 to August 4. Team India will be in England for 45 days for this tour.

With the IPL influencing selection decisions, the final squad announcement will likely take place after the tournament.
