After a decade-long wait, Australia clinched the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and secured a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final for the second consecutive time.
Australia will face South Africa in the final scheduled for June at Lord's in England. Two years ago, Australia defeated India in the WTC final to claim the trophy.
In the final match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Sydney, Australia registered an emphatic victory. Chasing a target of 162 runs set by India, Australia reached the goal with ease. Openers Usman Khawaja (41) and Constable (22) attacked the Indian bowlers from the outset, reducing the target significantly. Although Labuschagne and Steve Smith failed to make a significant impact, Travis Head (34) and Webster (39) ensured no further wickets fell, guiding their team to a comfortable win.
With this victory, Australia won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a 3-1 margin, marking their first triumph in ten years. From 2016-17 to 2022-23, India had dominated the series, winning it four times. However, this time, Team India fell short, ending their WTC hopes for the 2023-25 cycle.
This was India's final match in the cycle, and a must-win game to stay in contention. Having reached the WTC finals in both 2021 and 2023, India failed to qualify this time.
