The Himalayan nation of Nepal experienced a series of earthquakes on Tuesday morning, the most severe being of magnitude 7.1. Following this, two smaller tremors were also recorded. The powerful quake caused panic as the ground shook for several seconds, prompting people in areas such as Kathmandu and nearby regions to rush out of their homes in fear.
The first earthquake struck at 6:35 AM near the Labuche area, located 93 kilometers from the Nepal-Tibet border. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the epicenter was 10 kilometers deep in Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city. Two subsequent tremors of magnitudes 4.7 and 4.9 were also recorded in the same region.
The impact of the earthquake extended to northern India, with tremors felt in Delhi-NCR, Bihar, Assam, West Bengal, and other states. Panic-stricken residents in Bihar evacuated their homes. The tremors were also felt in neighboring countries like China, Bhutan, and Bangladesh.
Officials noted that Shigatse, Tibet, has recorded 29 earthquakes over the past five years, with magnitudes of 3 or higher and epicenters up to 200 kilometers deep. However, they emphasized that Tuesday's earthquake was significantly more powerful than previous occurrences.
