Hezbollah launched drone attacks targeting a military base in the Binyamin region of Israel, resulting in the deaths of four Israeli soldiers and injuries to over 67 others. Initial reports on social media suggested that Lieutenant General Herzl Halevi, the chief of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), had also been killed, a claim that gained traction after American commentator Jackson Hinkle mentioned it. However, the Jerusalem Post later published a report denying these claims.
The attack reportedly occurred at a training camp of the IDF’s Golani Brigade. It appears that the simultaneous drone strike overwhelmed the air defense systems in place. An IDF spokesperson, Hagari, confirmed that they have a complete grasp of the situation and are investigating how the drones managed to evade their air defense systems.
Experts identified the drones used in the attack as Hezbollah’s Mirbad-1 type, capable of reaching targets up to 120 kilometers away at speeds of 370 kilometers per hour, and carrying approximately 40 kilograms of explosives. These drones can fly at altitudes of up to 3,000 meters and are part of the Iranian-made Mohajer-2 series, which Hezbollah has been using since 2002.
Experts suggest that the combination of a large number of rockets and drones launched by Hezbollah caught Israel off guard, marking the first time their air defense systems were unable to intercept such an attack.
