The Washington plane crash has been recorded as the worst aviation disaster in the United States in the last 24 years. A passenger plane and a military helicopter collided mid-air, leaving no chance of survival for anyone on board, according to officials.
As per U.S. time, the tragic incident occurred at 8:47 PM on Wednesday. The passenger flight was about to land at Washington's Reagan National Airport when it collided with an Army helicopter just moments before touchdown.
The passenger aircraft was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, while the helicopter had three military personnel on board. Authorities believe all of them have perished in the crash.
After the collision, both aircraft plunged into the Potomac River. The plane split into two, with the rear section sinking vertically, while the helicopter submerged in reverse. Additionally, the river’s temperature at the time of the accident was below freezing, further reducing any chances of survival.
So far, 30 bodies have been recovered, and rescue operations are still underway.
Reacting immediately, President Trump stated that the disaster was caused by a command and control failure and ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.
