The High Court in Bangladesh on Thursday declined to issue a suo motu order to ban ISKCON’s activities, noting that government authorities have already taken necessary measures, The Daily Star reported.
Supreme Court lawyer Md Monir Uddin had submitted newspaper reports highlighting ISKCON’s alleged activities and requested a voluntary court directive to ban the organization and impose Section 144 in Chattogram, Rangpur, and Dinajpur. The HC bench however, deferred action instructing the attorney general to detail government measures addressing ISKCON’s recent actions.
The court's decision comes amid ongoing allegations against ISKCON including inciting communal unrest and imposing its practices on traditional Hindu communities. While tensions around the issue persist the court opted to rely on existing government interventions rather than take independent judicial action underscoring the complexity of religious and communal dynamics in the country.
