A 17-year-old girl, referred to as Kahaya (name changed), was married off to a 50-year-old Saudi tourist in Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, at a three-star hotel in the presence of a few people.
The marriage was arranged under a controversial provision of Islamic law, allowing temporary marriages. After the wedding, Kahaya was accompanied by her elder sister and an agent who acted as a guardian.
The Saudi tourist paid a dowry of $850 (around Rs 71,387), but after the agent and the officiating cleric took their cuts, only half of the amount reached Kahaya's family.
Following the wedding, her husband took her to a resort in Kota Bunga, located two kilometers south of Jakarta. There, Kahaya not only had to perform household chores such as cooking and cleaning but also endured the discomfort of sharing a bed with a man nearly her father's age. Kahaya expressed unease and a strong desire for the temporary marriage to end soon.
