The INDIA coalition led by the Congress has seen some bickering recently with questions arising over the leadership potential of Rahul Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee staking her claim with the support of other alliance Parties.
Thankfully, for the India bloc, they have found a cause to overcome their differences and put up a united face in Parliament, courtesy of Justice Shekhar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court.
Participating in an event organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Shekhar Yadav had delivered a speech on the constitutional necessity of a uniform civil code during which he said India should operate only according to the wishes of the majority and only that which benefits the welfare and happiness of the majority community should be accepted.
He apparently also made some derogatory remarks about the Muslims.
A motion to impeach Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav has been submitted to the Secretary General of Rajya Sabha by Opposition Party MPs. The motion was signed by 55 Rajya Sabha MPs, which is beyond the limit of 50 MPs required to move an impeachment motion.
While the process of impeachment is strictly a constitutional one, the fact that Shekhar Yadav made the comments at an event organized by VHP gives ample opportunity to the Opposition to politicize the issue. In Shekhar Yadav, the India bloc has found a rallying point.
