Senior politician named C Velayuthan who has the record of the first MLA from BJP in Tamil Nadu Assembly, passed away on May 8 at 73 in Kanniyakumari.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President JP Nadda expressed condolences.
Modi praised Velayuthan's role in building BJP in Tamil Nadu highlighting his focus on development and care for the poor.
Nadda remembered his dedication to the party and society.
Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai acknowledged Velayuthan's pioneering efforts for the party's growth in the state.
Other BJP leaders including Union Minister L Murugan also mourned his death.
Velayuthan won in 1996 marking BJP's debut in the Tamil Nadu Assembly despite DMK's dominance. He represented Padmanabhapuram constituency in Kanniyakumari district.
Before politics Velayuthan was active in Sevabharathi, an RSS-linked group, and participated in the anti emergency movement from 1975 to 1977.
