If there is someone from Ladakh who turned the heads of the entire India, it is Member of Parliament Tsering Namgyal.
Namgyal made headlines in 2019 with his viral speech in the Lok Sabha, defending the Narendra Modi government's decision to repeal Article 370 and establish Ladakh as a separate Union Territory.
His oratory skills and impactful speech impressed the entire nation, with apparent fans from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Kutch to Itanagar. There is no doubt in anybody until today that his candidacy for the MP seat from Ladakh again would be widely supported.
But today, the BJP announced Tashi Gyalson as its Ladakh Lok Sabha candidate, replacing current MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal.
Gyalson currently serves as the chairman and chief executive councillor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council in Leh.
The decision to replace Namgyal comes amidst dissatisfaction with the ruling party among some Buddhists in Leh.
Local reports suggest that Gyalson who is also a lawyer is better suited to uphold the BJP's position in the constituency which includes the Muslim-majority area of Kargil. Voting is set for May 20 in this region.
