Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma falsely claimed that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was holding a copy of the Chinese constitution based on an image where Gandhi is seen with a red covered booklet with a black border.
Sarma argued that the Indian constitution has a blue cover while the Chinese one is red. But the fact checking revealed that Gandhi was actually holding a pocket edition of the Indian constitution by Gopal Sankaranarayanan which has a red cover with a black border, distinct from the red Chinese constitution.
Sarma's post on X included images comparing the covers of the Indian and Chinese constitutions and Gandhi's booklet. Responses to Sarma’s post included images showing BJP leaders with similar red books, undermining his claim.
Sarma tweeted, "The original copy of the Constitution of India has a blue cover . The original Chinese constitution has a red cover. Does Rahul carry a Chinese Constitution? We will need to verify."
Further investigation found multiple news reports and photos from reputable sources like PTI, Business Standard, and Hindustan Times confirming Gandhi was holding a copy of the Indian constitution.
The searches also led to online marketplaces where the pocket edition of the Indian constitution by Gopal Sankaranarayanan identical to Gandhi's booklet is sold.
Conversely the Chinese constitution available online is completely red confirming the inaccuracy of Sarma's assertion.
