Congress leader Rahul Gandhi initiated his 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign in Karnataka by criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the electoral bonds scheme branding it as the ‘world’s biggest extortion racket’ and ‘world’s biggest scam’.
Speaking at a rally in Mandya before the upcoming polls on April 26, Gandhi pointed out Modi’s recent interview for a media house suggesting the prime minister seemed nervous with shaken hands while defending the scheme which was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.
Rahul sounds like hinting at Modi's age factor when he mentioned about 'shaken hands' indirectly in a ridiculing tone.
Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP government of concealing donor details and the extent of donations received through electoral bonds.
He also mentioned instances where companies allegedly donated significant amounts to the BJP after securing government contracts suggesting a correlation between donations and favorable treatment from investigative agencies like the CBI or ED.
Describing this tactic as ‘extortion’ Rahul Gandhi criticized the government for using threats to extract money comparing it to the behavior of petty criminals.
He stressed that Modi's defense of the electoral bonds scheme aimed to divert attention from genuine issues like campaign finance transparency.
Rahul Gandhi had been campaigning in Kerala's Wayanad constituency before arriving in Karnataka consistently targeting Modi's stance on electoral bonds.
