The Central Government is preparing to introduce the much-anticipated One Nation One Election Bill in the Lok Sabha tomorrow. This comes after the Union Cabinet approved two crucial bills aimed at implementing simultaneous elections across the country, commonly referred to as Jamili Elections. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal is expected to table the bill as part of the 129th Constitutional Amendment. Subsequently, the bill will be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further discussion.
Initially, reports suggested that the 129th Constitutional Amendment Bill and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment Bill) would be introduced in the Lok Sabha on Monday. However, these items were removed from the revised Lok Sabha agenda released by the Secretariat, delaying their presentation to Tuesday.
The primary goal of One Nation One Election is to conduct elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies simultaneously across the country. While this concept is not new, India last held simultaneous elections between 1952 and 1967. However, due to factors like unstable governments and premature dissolution of state assemblies, the practice was discontinued, leading to separate elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
This proposed bill aims to address these issues and bring all elections under a unified timeline, which could reduce electoral expenditure and administrative burdens while ensuring greater stability in governance.
All eyes are now on the Lok Sabha as the government takes a significant step toward reviving simultaneous elections.
