The Union government has approved a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) near Guwahati of Assam as announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's support is lauded as a special gift.
The prestigious IIM Ahmedabad will mentor the new institute, located at Marabhita in Kamrup district, and prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) in collaboration with the Assam government, according to the education ministry.
Chief Minister Sarma thanked Prime Minister Modi and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for their support, emphasizing that Assam provided prime land and logistical backing for the project.
He noted that this initiative supported by IIM Ahmedabad's mentorship, will transform Assam into an educational hub in Eastern India and boost its economic prospects.
After considering four potential sites the site selection committee chose Marabhita. In a letter dated February 16, 2024, the Assam government’s higher education department confirmed their agreement with this choice.
Subsequently Education Minister Pradhan gave in principle approval for the establishment of the new IIM and designated IIM Ahmedabad as the mentor for the project.
