Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a pre Lok Sabha Elections 2024 interview stated that Mahatma Gandhi, known as the Father of the Nation was not widely known globally until the release of the 1982 film 'Gandhi' directed by Richard Attenborough.
Modi pointed out that Indian leaders over the past 75 years should have worked harder to promote Gandhi internationally.
He suggested that the movie played a significant role in making Gandhi famous worldwide.
Modi criticized the lack of global awareness about Gandhi in post-Independence India contrasting it with the fame of figures like Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela.
He stressed that Gandhi deserved more global attention based on his travels and observations.
Modi also highlighted Gandhi's potential solutions for India's issues and discussed his redevelopment initiatives such as the Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram project announced in March 2024 commemorating the Dandi March anniversary.
Additionally he noted his contributions over the past decade in creating pilgrimage sites for BR Ambedkar the architect of the Indian Constitution.
