Marxist Leader Arrested On Sexist Remarks

Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader K S Hariharan was arrested on Friday for alleged sexist remarks against CPI(M) leader K K Shailaja and actress Manju Warrier.

The Vadakara police recorded his arrest and released him on station bail which is given for less severe offenses before appearing in court. Hariharan made the comments during a May 11 meeting in Vadakara.

The arrest followed a complaint from the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA). He was charged under IPC Sections 509 (insulting the modesty of a woman) and 153 (provocation with intent to cause riot).

After his release Hariharan stated that many people in Kerala make controversial remarks without facing legal action.

He and his party leader K K Rema were also attacked on social media.

Hariharan admitted his remarks were wrong and expressed regret. He claimed that bombs were thrown at his home by an unidentified gang on May 12.

The remarks were made during a meeting inaugurated by the Leader of Opposition, V D Satheesan, in response to accusations against UDF workers for making a morphed video of Shailaja.

The incident sparked criticism from his own party and the UDF. Hariharan later apologized publicly on Facebook.
