Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) for allegedly acting as an affiliate of the RSS since 2014 and undermining the Constitution.
Responding to NCERT’s decision to revise textbook references to the Gujarat riots and Babri Masjid demolition Ramesh accused the organization of politicizing education and attacking secularism a core constitutional value.
He also blamed NCERT for issues related to NEET 2024 'grace marks' suggesting this was a distraction from the National Testing Agency's own failures.
Ramesh argued that NCERT should focus on producing educational content rather than political propaganda. He stressed the importance of secularism in the Constitution supported by Supreme Court judgments.
He criticized the changes in textbooks noting a departure from what he studied. TMC leader Saket Gokhale echoed these concerns accusing the government of concealing historical details from students and questioned the BJP’s integrity regarding their historical actions.
NCERT director Dinesh Prasad Saklani defended the revisions as routine and intended to prevent creating "violent and depressed citizens." He dismissed allegations of saffronizing the curriculum asserting that students could learn about such events when older.
