If there were laws to protect men, I wouldn't have died

This is the painful cry of an engineer in a selfie video recorded before he took his own life, unable to bear the alleged harassment by his wife and in-laws. The video was sent to his parents just before his suicide. He was only 33 years old, with a bright future ahead.

In recent times, many men across the country have been ending their lives, unable to cope with the harassment from their spouses and in-laws. Before taking the extreme step, they are expressing their pain, suffering, and helplessness through suicide notes or videos. Most of them are professionals and government employees, but still, they are unable to withstand the emotional and mental torture.

The main reason — there are no laws to protect husbands. Recently, there was a massive protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi demanding legal protection for men.

Coming to the current incident: In Uttar Pradesh’s Etawah, a young engineer named Mohit Yadav died by suicide in a hotel room after being allegedly harassed by his wife and in-laws. The reason? He refused to transfer his property to them. They allegedly threatened to file a dowry harassment case if he didn't comply.

Mohit had married his wife Priya after seven years of love. Despite that, he was reportedly harassed to give away his property. In the video he sent to his parents, he stated that his in-laws even forced his wife to get an abortion, and his wife’s father had filed false cases against him. His brother-in-law also threatened to kill him.

As the pressure and harassment became unbearable, Mohit chose to end his life. In the video, he pleaded with his parents to forgive him and said that if justice is not served even after his death, his ashes should be thrown into a sewage drain.

He ended the video with the heartbreaking words: "If there were laws for men, I wouldn’t have made the decision to end my life." This is just one of many such tragic incidents happening across the country.
