Uttar Pradesh is considered to be BJP's fort, on par with Gujarat and Rajasthan. Moreover, Uttar Pradesh is the cradle of Hinduism, where the Ramayana, Bhagavata, and Mahabharata originated.
The state is also home to Ayodhya, Varanasi, and Mathura, which are significant religious places and political strongholds for the BJP.
Varanasi is the Lok Sabha constituency represented by Narendra Modi, and the state itself is led by Yogi Adityanath, who is considered to be the heir apparent to Narendra Modi.
Modi completed the long-pending task of building the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. He also rebuilt a section of the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi and made changes at Gyan Vapi. His next focus is on Mathura.
However, despite all this, the region, where the Hindu population is predominant, has not given the expected majority to BJP. The Samajwadi Party and the INDIA Bloc have provided a tough fight for the BJP.
While BJP won 62 out of 80 seats in 2019, now it has to limit to just 30plus. The major chunk is taken away by I.N.D.I.A bloc.
In the first phase of counting the votes, Modi was trailing, which shook the entire nation, though he picked up later.
It is very difficult to draw the conclusion that fulfilling religious sentiments and satiating emotions would continuously keep one in power. We need to see what lessons BJP will learn from the UP experience with today's results.
