The Tis Hazari Court in Delhi has issued a crucial ruling, stating that wearing revealing or short clothes in public places is not a crime. The court dismissed a case against seven bar dancers who were accused of wearing skimpy outfits and performing dances in a bar.
The court clarified that legal action should only be taken if such performances cause public inconvenience, rather than solely for dancing in revealing attire.
The case stemmed from a complaint filed by a constable who reported that women in a Delhi bar were performing "obscene dances" in short clothes. However, the court noted that the police failed to prove that the performances had caused any public disturbance.
The court ruled that the police complaint and witness statements had no merit, emphasizing that even the witnesses presented by the police admitted they had visited the bar for entertainment and were unaware of any disruptions.
