Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed concern over persistent disruptions in Parliament, which are eroding public trust in democratic institutions. Addressing the House on the final day of the Winter Session, he acknowledged that parliamentarians are receiving severe criticism from the public, and rightly so.
Reflecting on the 75th anniversary of the Constitution, Dhankhar highlighted a troubling reality: the productivity of the session was only 40.03%, with just 43 hours and 27 minutes of effective functioning. He pointed out that while some bills, like the Oilfields Amendment Bill and the Boilers Bill of 2024, were passed and a statement on India-China relations was heard, these achievements were overshadowed by disruptions.
Dhankhar also criticized the growing trend of media publicity before parliamentary consideration and misuse of procedural rules, which he said undermined the dignity of the institution.
