Vanajeevi and Padma Shri awardee Ramaiah (85), who dedicated his life to creating a healthy society through tree plantation, passed away on Saturday morning after prolonged illness. He breathed his last at his home in Reddypalli village, Khammam Rural Mandal.
Ramaiah, born and raised in a rural setting, developed a passion for planting trees from a young age. His wife Janakamma supported him wholeheartedly in his mission. Together, the couple planted over one crore (10 million) trees and took special care in nurturing them. Ramaiah lived an inspiring life, advocating that every person should plant trees as a way of life.
In fact, such was his dedication that he even named his grandchildren after trees. Recognizing his incredible service, the Indian government honored him with the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2018. He received the award in New Delhi from then-President Pranab Mukherjee. Over the years, Ramaiah received numerous awards, big and small.
Early this morning, his family found him unconscious at home and rushed him to the government hospital. Unfortunately, he passed away while undergoing treatment, according to family members. Nature lovers and environmentalists are now making their way to pay their last respects to the green crusader.
Ramaiah leaves behind a legacy rooted in nature, selfless service, and a vision for a greener future.
