A devastating fire broke out at the Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, late Friday night, resulting in the tragic death of 10 infants in the pediatric ward. The sudden spread of flames caused panic among patients and staff, leading to a minor stampede as people rushed to safety. Emergency services, including the police and firefighters, promptly arrived at the scene and managed to rescue 37 infants by breaking the doors and windows of the ward. At the time of the incident, there were reportedly 47 infants in the ward.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire started around 10:30 PM. The sudden blaze left the staff confused and unable to activate the hospital’s fire suppression system in time. By the time the firefighters arrived, the damage had already taken a severe toll. Survivors are currently receiving treatment, but some are in critical condition due to inhaling smoke and burns.
The exact cause of the fire remains unclear. While officials suspect an electrical overload, some suggest a gas cylinder explosion as a possible reason. The fire department and an army fire team worked tirelessly to control the flames. Senior district officials, including the DM and SP, were present to supervise rescue operations, which were hindered by heavy smoke in the ward.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. He called the incident "extremely painful" and directed district authorities to conduct rescue operations on a war footing. CM Adityanath offered his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. Further investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the fire.
