Priya, a 16-year-old, was not ready for the sudden change. Once bubbly, she now struggled with nausea and uncertainty. “I was still in school when I got pregnant. I didn’t know what was happening or how to ask for help,” she said. She is among the many teenage mothers in Tamil Nadu, where teenage pregnancy rates have risen despite India’s overall decline. Between 2015 and 2023, government hospitals in 15 districts reported 8,742 underage pregnancies, with Dharmapuri leading the count.
Experts cite lack of sex education, poor supervision, and socio-economic factors as key reasons. Many teens are left alone due to their parents’ long working hours, making them vulnerable. Education plays a crucial role, as teenage pregnancy rates are highest among those with little or no schooling. While Tamil Nadu has government schemes promoting education and healthcare, awareness remains low.
Doctors and activists stress the need for better sex education and legal support, urging society to address deep-rooted cultural and systemic issues. Without early intervention, teenage pregnancies will continue disrupting young lives and futures.
