Manish Sisodia, former Delhi deputy chief minister has been granted bail after 17 months in jail for alleged corruption related to the Delhi liquor policy.
The Supreme Court emphasized the importance of justice criticizing lower courts for delaying his bail and stressing that procedures should not overshadow the right to liberty. The court noted that keeping Sisodia in jail until his trial concludes would violate his constitutional rights particularly the right to a speedy trial. The Supreme Court condemned the reluctance of lower courts to grant bail underscoring that imprisonment should be the exception not the rule.
Sisodia was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on February 26, 2023 and later by the Enforcement Directorate in a related money laundering case. Despite the opposition from the CBI and ED Sisodia argued that after 17 months in custody with no trial started he deserved bail.
The Supreme Court agreed stating that he should not be further entangled in prolonged legal procedures.
