Kolkata Police arrested Kirti Sharma, a second-year BCom student, for a provocative social media post inciting violence against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Using the Instagram handle "kirtisocial," Sharma encouraged others to assassinate the Chief Minister and unlawfully disclosed the identity and photograph of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College on August 9.
The police stated that Sharma's posts were offensive, revealing the victim's identity and making threatening comments against the Chief Minister. These posts were deemed provocative, capable of inciting social unrest and promoting hatred. In response to the incident, Kolkata Police have taken strict action against related social media activity.
Summons were issued to several individuals, including Trinamool MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, former BJP MP Locket Chatterjee, and two prominent doctors, for allegedly spreading rumors and revealing the victim's identity.
