Protests erupted in Surat-after stones were thrown at a Ganesh pandal in the Sayedpura area on Sunday evening. Six individuals involved in the stone pelting along with 27 others who encouraged the act were arrested. Around 1,000 police officers were deployed to control the situation. The police used lathi charges and tear gas where necessary to maintain order.
Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot confirmed that those responsible for disturbing the peace were arrested. Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi visited the site and assured strict action against the offenders.
In a similar incident in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, stone pelting occurred during a Ganesh idol procession. Around 500 people gathered at the Station Road police station demanding action.
Security was tightened and the police registered a case against the accused. Both incidents have raised concerns about maintaining peace during religious events.
