The Delhi Mayor election concluded with a significant win for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Mahesh Khanchi. In a closely contested election, Mahesh, a councilor from Karol Bagh's Dev Nagar, secured 133 votes, defeating the BJP candidate, who garnered 130 votes. Out of the 265 votes cast, two were declared invalid, giving Mahesh the majority needed for victory.
The battle for control of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has intensified between the BJP and AAP. Political differences between the two parties had delayed the mayoral election, initially scheduled for April, until it finally took place on Thursday. AAP MPs Sanjay Singh and N.D. Gupta, along with seven BJP MPs from Delhi, participated in the voting process held at the MCD House.
Meanwhile, in a notable move, Congress councilor Sabila Begum resigned from her party, declaring her support for the AAP candidate. Mahesh will replace Shelly Oberoi, taking on the responsibilities as Delhi's new Mayor, and will become the third person from a Scheduled Caste (SC) community to hold this prestigious position.
