The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), constituted to review the bills related to the "One Nation, One Election" proposal, is set to hold its second meeting on January 31. Details of the meeting have been published on the official Lok Sabha website.
The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill were introduced during the last Winter Session of the Lok Sabha and referred to the JPC for detailed examination. The committee held its first meeting on January 8, during which representatives and officials from the Ministry of Law and Justice briefed the members on the provisions of the proposed laws.
In the previous meeting, opposition members expressed concerns, describing the proposed amendments as an attack on the basic spirit of the Constitution and federalism. The JPC is chaired by BJP MP P.P. Chaudhary.
The committee comprises 39 members, including prominent figures such as Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, Sanjay Jha from JD(U), Shrikant Shinde from Shiv Sena, Sanjay Singh from Aam Aadmi Party, and TMC leaders Kalyan Banerjee and Saket Gokhale. In response to the willingness of political parties to engage on the issue of simultaneous elections, the government expanded the committee's membership to 39.
The JPC also includes former Union ministers Anurag Thakur and Parshottam Rupala, along with MPs Anil Baluni, Bansuri Swaraj, and Sambit Patra. Of the 39 members, 27 are from the Lok Sabha, while 12 are from the Rajya Sabha.
