Jagjit Singh Dallewal, a farmers' leader in Punjab, has been on a hunger strike since November 26, demanding solutions to farmers' issues. His health has deteriorated significantly, but other farmer leaders are preventing his transfer to a hospital. They insist on receiving assurances for their demands before allowing Dallewal to be moved for medical treatment.
The Supreme Court had earlier directed Punjab’s Chief Secretary and DGP on December 20 to persuade Dallewal and ensure his immediate admission to a hospital. However, their failure to implement the court's order resulted in a contempt petition being filed against them.
During today's hearing, government lawyers informed the court that other farmer leaders were obstructing Dallewal's transfer to the hospital. The court expressed displeasure at the behavior of the farmers, stating that those concerned about Dallewal’s well-being would not act this way. It ordered immediate action to convince the leaders and ensure Dallewal’s hospitalization.
