In the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections' first phase on April 19, a significant portion of candidates are wealthy, as per a study by the Association for Democratic Reforms.
Among the 1,618 candidates, 450 are 'crorepatis', meaning they possess assets worth at least Rs 1 crore. Notably 193 candidates have assets over Rs 5 crore and 139 fall between Rs 2 crore and Rs 5 crore.
Major parties show a trend of wealth among their candidates, with high percentages of 'crorepatis'.
For instance, most candidates from parties like Rashtriya Janata Dal, AIADMK, DMK, Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress, Trinamool Congress, and Bahujan Samaj Party have declared assets exceeding Rs 1 crore.
The richest candidates include Nakul Nath from Congress with Rs 717 crore, Ashok Kumar from AIADMK with Rs 662 crore and Dhevanathan Yadav T from BJP with Rs 304 crore.
We are yet to get the data of complete list of the richest candidates contesting in LS Polls.
