The CBI court in Sealdah delivered its verdict on Saturday in the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case, which had caused nationwide outrage. The court found Sanjay Rai, a police volunteer, guilty in the case. Addressing the accused, the judge stated, "You deserve punishment," and announced that the sentencing would take place on Monday.
On August 9 last year, a horrific incident occurred at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a 31-year-old junior doctor was sexually assaulted and murdered during her night shift. The main accused, Sanjay Rai, was identified and arrested on August 10. Following the directions of the Calcutta High Court, the CBI took over the investigation of the case. The CBI also arrested the former principal of RG Kar Medical College in connection with the case.
Amid nationwide protests, the CBI examined 120 witnesses during the investigation. The prosecution has sought the death penalty for the accused. Arguments in the case concluded on January 9, leading to the CBI court's Saturday verdict, which convicted Sanjay Rai. The court stated that the sentences will be announced on Monday.
