Amritpal Singh, head of Waris Punjab De and newly elected MP from Khadoor Sahib, will take the oath as a Lok Sabha member on July 5, 2024, after being granted parole for up to four days.
Detained under the National Security Act in Dibrugarh jail, Assam, he will likely be airlifted to Delhi.
This follows a request by the Punjab government to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for Amritpal's temporary release.
His legal adviser, Imaan Singh Khara, confirmed the request was forwarded to the Punjab government via the jail superintendent and reached the Speaker.
Under Section 15 of the NSA temporary release is permitted with conditions. Amritpal who won a significant margin in the elections has been in jail since April 2023.
The Punjab government's efforts to facilitate his oath-taking have brought hope to his supporters.
Additionally three of his associates also detained under the NSA, plan to contest upcoming Assembly by polls.
Another victorious candidate Rashid from Baramulla will also take oath on July 5 under similar conditions.
