A rare medical phenomenon has come to light in Maharashtra, where doctors discovered a foetus inside the abdomen of an unborn baby. This unusual condition, known as "foetus-in-foetu," was detected during a routine scan of a pregnant woman.
The 32-year-old woman, a resident of Buldhana district, is currently nine months pregnant and undergoing treatment at a government hospital. As part of her prenatal care, doctors conducted several tests, including a sonography, which revealed the presence of a foetus inside the baby’s abdomen.
Dr. Prasad Agarwal, the gynecologist monitoring the pregnancy, explained that this condition was not detected in any of the previous scans conducted during the woman’s pregnancy. It was only during the ninth-month scan that the anomaly was discovered. He stated that such rare occurrences happen due to complications during the formation of twins in the womb.
The woman is reported to be in good health, but the newborn will require special care immediately after birth. Foetus-in-foetu is an extremely rare condition, with only around 200 cases reported worldwide, including 15–20 cases in India.
This incident has drawn attention to the complexities of prenatal development and the importance of advanced medical care during pregnancy.
