Yoga guru Ramdev has raised concerns over Mamta Kulkarni's appointment as the Mahamandleshwar of the Kinnar Akhara at the ongoing Maha Kumbh. He criticized the association of "vulgarity, intoxication, and inappropriate behavior" with the sacred festival, asserting that it does not represent the true essence of the Kumbh. Ramdev questioned how some individuals, previously indulging in worldly pleasures, suddenly attain titles like Mahamandleshwar.
Kulkarni, a former Bollywood actress known for films like Karan Arjun and Baazi, assumed the title 'Mai Mamta Nand Giri' after taking 'sanyas' in the Kinnar Akhara on January 24, 2025. Her ascension has faced opposition from some spiritual leaders. Kulkarni explained that she chose Laxmi Narayan Tripathi as her spiritual mentor during the ceremony, claiming it was a divine instruction.
Kulkarni left the film industry in the early 2000s and has since lived a private life.
