Rajasthan: Oldest Sitting MLA Dies

Veteran BJP leader and former Jodhpur MLA Suryakanta Vyas passed away early Wednesday at the age of 86. Her family reported that she had been unwell and bedridden for several months before her passing.

Vyas was a six-time MLA, representing Jodhpur’s Soorsagar and previously the City constituency. She began her political career as a councilor and made substantial contributions to Jodhpur’s development during the tenures of Chief Ministers Vasundhara Raje and Bhairon Singh Shekhawat. Her influence continued even during Ashok Gehlot's administration, where she played a vital role in the region's growth.

Known affectionately as ‘Jiji’, Vyas was born on February 23, 1938, and contested for the MLA position seven times since 1990, winning six. She served three terms each for Jodhpur and Surasagar. In the 2023 elections, she did not receive a ticket due to her age. Governor Hari Bhau Bagde and Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma expressed deep condolences.
