During her Maharashtra tour President Droupadi Murmu visited Mumbai coinciding with protests led by NCP (Sharad Pawar) leaders Supriya Sule and Anil Deshmukh who demanded the swift implementation of the 'Shakti Bill.'
The bill which prescribes the death penalty for rapists was passed by the previous MVA government but remains pending approval from the Central government. The protestors argued that the 'Shakti Act' is crucial for women's safety and must be enforced immediately.
Supriya Sule highlighted the rise in violence against women in Maharashtra while Anil Deshmukh criticized the delay in the bill's approval noting it has been pending in Delhi for three years.
He also mentioned writing to Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to push for its implementation. Uddhav Thackeray, former Chief Minister also expressed disappointment over the bill's delay linking it to the fall of his government. The 'Shakti Bill' awaits approval to enforce stricter penalties for crimes against women and children.
