Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi has achieved a remarkable victory in the Wayanad by-election, surpassing the majority secured by her brother, Rahul Gandhi, in the previous election. Rahul, who had contested and won from both Wayanad in Kerala and Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh during the last general elections, vacated the Wayanad seat, leading to a by-election. Priyanka Gandhi contested this election and emerged victorious with a record-breaking majority.
According to the recently announced results, Priyanka defeated her closest rival, CPM candidate Satyan Mokeri, by a margin of 4,08,036 votes. This surpasses Rahul Gandhi's previous majority of 3,64,000 votes, showcasing Priyanka’s growing appeal in her first direct electoral battle.
Priyanka Gandhi has so far been actively involved in Congress’ election campaigns but hadn’t contested directly until now. With her resounding win in Wayanad, Priyanka is set to join her brother Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha, while their mother, Sonia Gandhi, continues to represent the Congress in the Rajya Sabha.
This victory not only strengthens the Congress in the Lok Sabha but also adds a significant voice to the party's leadership. However, the critical question remains: how effectively can Priyanka Gandhi contribute to steering the Congress party towards regaining power at the national level?
