The cost of onions in India has surged significantly, impacting household budgets nationwide. Until recently, wholesale markets sold onions at Rs 40-60 per kilogram, but prices have now escalated to Rs 70-80 per kilogram, with some regions even reporting prices above Rs 80 on Friday.
This sharp increase is burdening consumers and destabilizing family budgets. According to traders, the rising onion prices are mainly driven by inflation and increased procurement costs.
A vendor from Delhi's market highlighted that while the price per kilogram in mandis has climbed to Rs 60-70, affecting overall sales, onions remain an essential item in daily meals, compelling people to buy them despite the spike. Additionally, the cost of garlic has doubled, further straining household finances and adding to consumer woes.
