Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reflected that if former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s vision had been pursued, Jammu and Kashmir would not have lost its autonomy and become a Union Territory.
Abdullah recounted how in 2000, despite New Delhi’s rejection of J&K’s autonomy resolution, Vajpayee recognized the need for dialogue and had even appointed a law minister to discuss the matter. However, Vajpayee’s passing halted these efforts.
Abdullah praised Vajpayee’s initiatives to connect divided parts of J&K, fostering personal bonds among its people. He lamented that Vajpayee’s approach, which emphasized connection over division, was abandoned, increasing distances instead of building unity.
Vajpayee’s vision of “Insaniyat (humanity), Jamhuriyat (democracy), and Kashmiriyat (Kashmiri identity),” according to Abdullah, was unparalleled in its wisdom. He called Vajpayee a visionary leader, uniquely devoted to bridging divides and promoting harmony across the region.
