Nitish, Chirag, RSS, and Now Chandrababu: Demand for a Caste Census

Across India, political parties and social organizations are increasingly calling for a caste-based census. In Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar conducted a caste census while in alliance with the RJD and has since advocated for a national-level caste census. Another key NDA ally, Chirag Paswan, has also supported this demand. Leaders like Anupriya Patel, Sanjay Nishad, and OP Rajbhar from Uttar Pradesh have echoed similar calls. Recently, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), led by Chandrababu Naidu, joined the chorus for a caste census.

Even the BJP's ideological parent, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has expressed openness to the idea, provided it is not used for political gains. In an interview with *The Indian Express*, Chandrababu Naidu highlighted the need for a caste census, calling it a reflection of public sentiment. He emphasized that such a census would help address economic inequality by providing insights through an economic and skill-based analysis.

Naidu stressed that while caste remains a social factor, economic conditions play a more significant role in determining respect and status in society. He argued that addressing economic disparity would promote social balance.

The RSS, following its All India Representatives’ Meeting, offered a measured response, stating that a caste census could be conducted if society demands it, but cautioned against its use for political exploitation, which could fuel social discord.

The growing support for a caste census presents a challenge for the Modi government as it navigates this politically sensitive issue.
