In the context of INDIA bloc's success in recent by polls across seven states senior Congress leader P Chidambaram expressed optimism saying the 'wind is behind the sails' of the bloc.
He said that the mood of the people is against BJP. He noted the by elections showed public sentiment against the BJP but stressed the need to strengthen the Congress's party structure in weaker states.
The INDIA bloc won 10 out of 13 contested seats with the BJP winning two and an independent candidate winning one.
Chidambaram also criticized the central government's decision to observe 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' on June 25 to mark the 1975 Emergency arguing it was irrelevant to debate the event 50 years later.
He acknowledged the Emergency was a mistake admitted by Indira Gandhi and emphasized the amendments made to prevent a similar situation.
Chidambaram urged the BJP to focus on the present rather than the past highlighting the learned lessons and changes in the Constitution to safeguard against future emergencies.
