Modi to Visit U.S: No More Cuffs To Deportees?

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the U.S. from February 12-13 to meet President Donald Trump. The visit follows Trump’s invitation and comes shortly after his re-election. It also coincides with criticism of Modi’s government over the deportation of 104 Indian immigrants with hand and leg cuffs under Trump’s immigration policies. Before arriving in Washington, Modi will visit France from February 10-12.

During their January 27 call, Trump and Modi discussed immigration, trade, and India’s potential purchase of U.S. security equipment. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that the visit would strengthen the strategic partnership between the two nations.

India, a key U.S. ally in countering China, seeks to improve trade relations, secure more skilled worker visas, and avoid U.S. tariffs. India may reduce tariffs on over 30 imported items to ease trade tensions. Bilateral trade exceeded $118 billion in 2023/24, with India maintaining a $32 billion surplus.

We have to see if Trump goes slow on deportees and send them without cuffs after Modi's visit.
