The Centre is finalising a site for a memorial to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away on December 26 at 92. Officials have inspected areas near Rajghat, Rashtriya Smriti Sthal, and Kisan Ghat, but no site has been finalised.
The BJP and Congress clashed over Singh’s cremation at Nigambodh Ghat, typically for commoners, instead of Rajghat, which is reserved for national leaders. The government plans to consult Singh’s family on the memorial’s location and form a trust to oversee its construction.
In 2013, the Union Cabinet established the Rashtriya Smriti for national leaders' last rites. Congress leader Praveen Davar suggested Chandigarh as a fitting location for Singh’s memorial, reflecting the ongoing debate over its placement. Singh, known as the architect of India’s economic reforms, holds a significant legacy that will be commemorated through this memorial.
