The rape of a student at Anna University, Chennai, has led to an unexpected twist as the Special Investigation Team (SIT) seizes mobile phones of journalists and questions several others. The SIT is probing the assault and the unauthorized disclosure of the survivor's identity due to a technical glitch.
Journalists have raised concerns over their rights and media freedom after being summoned, interrogated on personal matters, and having their phones confiscated. The Press Club of Chennai condemned these actions, citing harassment and legal irregularities. They highlighted the unlawful summons via WhatsApp, which the Supreme Court had ruled invalid, and criticized prolonged waiting times and forced questioning.
The Editors Guild of India also expressed concerns over the investigation's legality and the treatment of journalists. They stressed that journalists were fulfilling their professional duties and urged the SIT to focus on all parties involved in the FIR's mishandling.
