Manipur Crisis: NPP Withdraws Support to BJP-Led Government

The National People's Party (NPP), an ally of the BJP in Manipur, has dealt a major blow to Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s government by withdrawing its support. The party cited the state government's failure to control ethnic violence and restore normalcy as the primary reason for this decision.

In a letter addressed to BJP national president J.P. Nadda, NPP, led by Conrad Sangma, stated:

"The government under Biren Singh's leadership has completely failed to resolve the ongoing crisis and restore normalcy in the state. Considering the current situation, the NPP has decided to withdraw its support to the government, effective immediately."

Background of the Conflict

Manipur has been embroiled in ethnic violence for over a year, primarily between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The unrest has claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands. The latest incident saw the brutal killing of six individuals, including women and children from the Meitei community, allegedly by Kuki militants. This has sparked widespread protests, with demonstrators attacking the residences of the CM, ministers, and MLAs.

Central Government's Response

In light of the escalating violence, Union Home Minister Amit Shah canceled his election campaigns in Maharashtra and held a high-level review meeting in Delhi on Sunday. He discussed the security situation with senior officials and plans to convene another meeting on Monday to further assess the crisis.

The situation in Manipur remains tense, and the withdrawal of NPP’s support has added another layer of uncertainty to the already volatile political landscape.
