Former Bollywood actor Mamta Kulkarni has been appointed as Mahamandleshwar of the Kinnar Akhada during the Maha Kumbh, sparking debate. Kulkarni performed her own pind daan at Sangam Ghat, marking her formal initiation as "Shri Yamai Mamta Nandgiri."
Acharya Mahamandleshwar Laxmi Narayan of Kinnar Akhada defended the decision, revealing Kulkarni had been preparing for this spiritual role for over a year. He emphasized that the Akhada welcomes individuals regardless of past professions or art forms.
However, transgender Kathavachak Jagatguru Himangi Sakhi Maa criticized the appointment, questioning its ethics due to Kulkarni's controversial past, including drug-related allegations. Himangi called the decision a publicity stunt, demanding an investigation into its credibility.
Kulkarni, once a leading actress in the 1990s, expressed that her spiritual path was guided by divine and guru orders, leaving her Bollywood fame behind for a life of devotion.
