Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge expressed strong doubts about the feasibility of Prime Minister Modi’s “One Nation, One Election” proposal, labeling it as "impossible."
Kharge argued that for such a significant shift to be realized, it would first require a comprehensive bill to be introduced in Parliament. Only through this process, and with the confidence and consensus of all political parties and stakeholders could such a proposal even be considered.
Kharge emphasized that simply announcing the plan without detailed groundwork and discussion with other political entities undermines the democratic process. He highlighted concerns that the government often fails to implement what it proposes and cast doubt on the likelihood of “One Nation, One Election” coming to fruition.
His comments underscore the challenges and potential impracticalities associated with the proposal reflecting the opposition’s broader skepticism about the centralization of the election process under one national timetable.
