A Delhi court deferred Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's bail hearing in the excise policy case to June 7, requiring him to return to jail on June 2.
Kejriwal sought interim bail for a week on medical grounds, but the Enforcement Directorate opposed the plea, claiming he misled the public by saying he would voluntarily surrender on June 2.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that Kejriwal is not surrendering voluntarily and accused him of suppressing facts about his health.
Kejriwal’s lawyer N Hariharan stated that if bail is denied Kejriwal has no other option. The ED insisted the court cannot modify the Supreme Court's order which had granted Kejriwal interim bail for election campaigning.
The ED also contended that Kejriwal falsely claimed weight loss and was traveling instead of undergoing medical tests. Kejriwal's lawyer clarified that the plea was for medical bail not an extension of the SC order.
The ED's counsel SG Mehta suggested Kejriwal delayed tests to mislead the court. Despite his press conference announcing his surrender the Supreme Court had earlier denied his request for a 7 day bail extension for medical reasons.
